Portable home biogas systems consists of small sized plastic tank or bag that turns domestic food wastes into biogas which can be used as a cooking or lighting fuel. Biogas is made in a biogas digester. We call it a digester because it is a large tank filled with bacteria that eats (or digests) organic waste and gives a flammable gas, called biogas. In addition to biogas, the portable biogas systems make waste water that is rich in nutrients. This slurry may be used as organic manure to help in farming activities.

One kilogram of kitchen waste, if well digested, yields 0.3 cubic meters of biogas per day according to Dublin, 2008. 1 Cum Biogas equlas 0.4Kg of LPG . Our system will have 5kg waste digestion capacity suitable for 3-5 member family.
There is a problem of poor and unreliable cooking fuel in Africa such as the use fire wood and charcoal. Women walk long distances for firewood. Portable biogas systems will eliminate this problem by providing cheap and carbon free technology and generation of organic manure. The key objective of this idea is to provide affordable, reliable and carbon emission free fuel for homes and institutions. Also it is aimed at reducing deforestation and conserving environment by eradicating the use of charcoal and firewood
BASIC DESIGN PRINCIPLE
Biogas systems make use of a relatively simple, well-known, and mature technology. The main part of a biogas system is a small tank or bag of 1.5m to 2m long, 1m to 1.2m wide and 0.8m or less high or digester. Inside this tank, bacteria convert organic waste into methane gas through the process of anaerobic digestion. Each day, the operator of a biogas system feeds the digester with household by-products such as market waste, kitchen waste, and manure from livestock. The methane gas produced inside biogas system will pass through dehydration process and desulphurization process and the obtained pure methane may be used for cooking, lighting, and other energy needs. Waste that has been fully digested exits the biogas system in the form of organic fertilizer. This system can last up to 10 years.
